The critics forget this nation was in part founded on economic unrest. The REAL historic Tea Party.

People whom had real taxation without representation which is different than taxation without liking the elected official.

Thought I would share a bigoted Tweet I received with regards to this page from some Tea Bagger on Twitter:

@FloridaJayhawk FloridaJayhawk
Plantation Democrat RT @Gus_802: Colin Powell: Occupy movement 'is as American as apple pie'...

Needless to say the knuckledragging moron are of course livid and rattling their cages over this. OWS has obviously become a focal point for the wingnut shut-ins.

7 cinesimon  Fri, Nov 11, 2011 2:31:11pm

Powell's contention that OWS is about protesting "those they think are doing to well in our society… " is utter bullshit, and just as destructive a meme as saying the protest itself is unpatriotic.
This has nothing to do with peoples' success. Of course. This has everything to do with the stacked deck. Of course.

He's got a point. One of the first Occupy-style protests was WWI veterans protesting to get the government money they were promised:

The Bonus Army: How A Protest Led To The GI BIll

Occupy Wall Street protests have sprung up in cities across the U.S. — and around the world. The common denominator between them is protesters' commitment to stay and camp out. They've pitched tents and built large, impromptu communities.

It's a form of protest that echoes throughout American history.

In 1932, another group of protesters set up encampments and vowed to stay until their voices were heard.

As World War I drew to a close in 1918, millions of American veterans returned home to the promise of a cash bonus — compensation for their overseas service.

There was a catch, though: The money would not be paid out until 1945.

I think it's implicit in his statement that "doing too well" is a direct result of the "stacked deck" you refer to. Powell doesn't hate the rich; he is "the rich" as are most of his friends and colleagues. He is hardly some sort of socialist, and he's done pretty well himself without having to rely on a stacked deck.

While dealing with other stacked decks.

Palomino I'm not so sure.
I'm sure his intentions are good, but I'm just as sure that he's naively bought into the idea that we hate all rich people - not just those who abuse trust, intentionally loose other peoples' money because it makes them more, all that - the stacked deck.
I really do think that he believes what the majority of the media have been reporting - that OWS is about protesting rich people regardless of how they became successful. Many good - but too trusting(and to be blunt, too lazy to look beyond the bullshit analysis they glean from the evening news) - people believe that.

True, but those men had a better case and could point to a legitimate accomplishment they had done for the nation. Most* of OWS cannot make such a claim.

*: Most, not all. Those in OWS who have served with honor may indeed be held on the level of the Bonus Army.

re: #12 Dark_Falcon

That implies that the only people with any accomplishment or with a legitimate case to ever protest are military veterans.

First, fighting wars overseas is not the only "legitimate accomplishment" one can do for their country.

Second, every one of my friends that are part of OWS are college educated but unemployed. Us recent grads have been TRYING to accomplish something good through work, but the whole point of this is we can't and people who are already rich are profiting from it.

I realize this is veteran's day, and I have nothing but respect for those who serve in the Armed forces and they rightly should be celebrated. But those who aren't should not be considered second-class citizens whose complaints, views, and protests are discounted. This isn't a protest or movement about anything military-related; why would being in the military vs. not being in the military even be relevant?

Oh those selfish public servants! Didn't they know they were ruining their countrymen's budget by demanding that promises be kept?
