Fire unionized janitors…use child labor in their place…thus removing one of the very last living wage jobs in some of these neighborhoods…would somehow lead to more stable families and higher achieving kids.

Yeah, I want 10 year olds using bleach and other strong chemicals to clean floors and bathrooms.

Like I’ve said, revolting in body, mind, and spirit.

Newt doesn’t worry because it won’t be his kids that won’t be doing this job. I suspect if it was his kids that were risking their health he’d be singing a different tune.

“Yes. And when poor families realize that they can get that 10 year old to bring home money from a job, school will become that much more important to them.”
Just when you thought that Newt Gingrich, disgraced former Speaker Of The House, cannot possibly stick his head any further up his own ass, he proves you wrong. You can wash him up but the stink stays. Wisdom from a grifter.

Newt said:

“Most of these schools ought to get rid of the unionized janitors, have one master janitor and pay local students to take care of the school. The kids would actually do work, they would have cash, they would have pride in the schools, they’d begin the process of rising.”

He didn’t add:

And they’d be a hell of a lot cheaper too!

The intellectual leader of the GOP. The Big Ideas man.

re: #4 Charles

Yeah, the kids are already on medicaid or schip, so no need to offer those expensive family health care plans, or paid family leave, or life insurance. I mean, c’mon, the families would just kill the kids for the money, after all.

I wouldn’t have a problem if a child helped clean the school, but as a volunteer. And away from dangerous chemicals. Let him use soap and water to clean and leave the face-melting chemicals to those that know how to use them. Oh, and have a janitor monitor him/her. But as far as paying them and replacing the janitors: Fuck. No. Again, if a child wants to volunteer to do some cleaning, fine, just keep him/her away from chemicals and supervised.

“This is something that no liberal wants to deal with,” Gingrich said. “Core policies of protecting unionization and bureaucratization against children in the poorest neighborhoods, crippling them by putting them in schools that fail has done more to create income inequality in the United States than any other single policy. It is tragic what we do in the poorest neighborhoods, entrapping children in, first of all, child laws, which are truly stupid.

“You say to somebody, you shouldn’t go to work before you’re what, 14, 16 years of age, fine. You’re totally poor. You’re in a school that is failing with a teacher that is failing. I’ve tried for years to have a very simple model,” he said. “Most of these schools ought to get rid of the unionized janitors, have one master janitor and pay local students to take care of the school. The kids would actually do work, they would have cash, they would have pride in the schools, they’d begin the process of rising.”

Bolded the real reason Newt wants children doing work: union-busting. Anything to take away workers’ power and hard-fought rights, and empowering those poor, maligned businessmen who can’t afford uber-luxurious jets instead of just-luxurious jets.

The big money our school systems would save on overpaid janitors would help us improve our world ranking in math and science! /

I can only hope somebody videotaped this.

they would have pride in the schools, they’d begin the process of rising

Alternatively you could just feed the kid yeast and place him/her somewhere warm until he/she “rises.” Of course then the trick is getting them into the oven without being pushed in yourself…

Why stop at janitors.

The only Boston Public School janitor I know works a second job as a security guard so he can afford to live in the city. Fuck off newt.
