Right now, the over-the-top actions by police in black body armor works in favor of Occupy and students. Violent retaliation, no matter how justified, will only backfire since Americans are heavily disposed to favor cops even if the cops are being brutal assholes.

If we had a mass shooting and/or "emergency decree" mass arrests and secret detentions of protestors, then we might cross the threshold into armed revolt.

We are not there...yet.

Hopefully never.

What was the context of this? I've heard of this pepper-spraying, but don't know much about it.

The Tl;dr version is some cops decided that they were too lazy to pull some demonstrators apart and resorted to tactics that the courts have found illegal since 1997, and they did so on video.
