Wouldn’t your parents notice? I would certainly notice if either of my teens had a job, but no money. And for matter, couldn’t you just study part-time and score better?

This is what happens when you build an education system that’s obsessed with test scores.

But test scores allow students to be stacked up against each other nationally.

My husband was really surprised to learn that the school our daughter is probably going to does not even ask about class standing.

Hardly surprising. He was from a class of 50 or 60. I was from a class of 350, and our daughter’s class is something like 450. Being valedictorian of his school is a very different matter from being valedictorian of our daughter’s school, and even the grades probably mean different things. (If you tell him this, he gets irritable, so I drop it.) SAT scores are supposedly uniform, though.

Right. No one ever cheated on anything before educational testing.

There may also be some politics behind the class standing thing as well. My high school didn’t track class standing beyond valedictorian/co-valedictorian because of the Vietnam-era policy of exempting the top 10% of the class from the draft.

Really? I’ve never heard of that, and at my age, I should have. Was it very early on?

re: #7 calochortus

The policy was still in place in 2000. I don’t know when it was instituted. I also took a look at deferment classifications, and was unable to find any references. It might have just been an urban legend then.

Who knows? But thanks for checking on it for me.
