Just back from OccupyLA. The media tent is being struck. Trucks are being loaded as equipment is taken away. The mood is depressed and a bit angry. I expect many die hards to get arrested. But I saw no preparations for a fight. Just many determined to sit in and stay. We met one couple from Georgia. They had received a lot of help from Occupy and the city by way of medical & food assistance. And some night at a hotel that takes city vouchers.
I must admit the camp is in decline. It has become as much homeless tent city as protest. This happened out of the kindness of the volunteers. LA is providing 50 beds for homeless occupiers. But it may have been a mistake of the heart. The place is a huge mess. Not like a few weeks ago.
It was a desultory and depressing scene. One sad byplay was a critic with a camera and an attitude. He was talking some crap when a man walked right up and asked “are you prejudiced against hippies?” The critic said quite plainly “yes I am”. The man turned his back in resignation in the face of raw bigotry. How sad that a person would be so proud of prejudice.
I must contend getting evicted may be the best thing for all including Occupy. Time to step up to the task of taking the next step up. Get offices. Get to winning voters and representatives over to the cause.
It was so depressing that we next went up the mountain to simply get away from the city scene and into some natural beauty. Any way I’ll cut the video and photographs after we get film back from the lab. LWC was using a Lomo panorama camera for some sweeping images we hope will turn out well.
Tonight at midnight there may be may be a forcible eviction. I wish all involved a safe night. Peace above all else. No one can use violence to claim the moral high ground on this.
I met one man well equipped to livestream the eviction if it happens. I suggest that will be worth watching. Those that can should make this slogan a truth. “The whole world is watching”.
I shot some limited video. LWC led off with his Lomo pinhole panoramic film camera. We will not have those images for a day or two, and they will be an essential part of the video we will put together.
The movement is at a turning point. It may or may not survive. But I expect the best of the Occupy people will relocate, repair, and re emerge. How strong will be up to them, and no one else.
Godspeed OccupyLos Angeles.
