And nobody knows about it. CNN reports that “Democrats failed to get the 60 votes needed…” without saying that is to overcome a filibuster. Like 60 votes is normal (well, these days it is, I suppose). Nothing about Republican obstructionism. Nothing about 60 votes to get to a vote. Nothing.

And we wonder why people are clueless.

Fucking ‘news’ organizations. Every one of them.

I think “nullification” is just an American-centric term for what it really is, a “free veto”, persuaded by a range of moneyed interests and interest groups.

The Senate needs to quit being “nice” about filibusters and blocks and bring back the days where the blockers had to visibly hold the floor and be clearly seen obstructing the business of the Senate. That would add a missing element back in and make the calculation of what is worth spending political capital to block different.

Nullification is obviously a loaded term. Historical context here: think John C. Calhoun, South Carolina, and struggles over federal/state rights in the years before the Civil War. But it is an appropriately dramatic term for the on-the-fly rewriting of the Constitution that the unified Senate Republicans have been carrying out these past five years.”

And for anyone who really believes the two are unrelated, I hope they are not also in the market for a bridge.
