When it comes to who to believe, these are our choices: 1) Kayak 2) a network 3) network sales departments 4) the FFA.

I mean, is it possible that whoever sold the ads—The show is going to present the truth about American Muslims—used just the right inflections to imply that this would be like a 60 Minutes expose? Would an ad salesperson do that?

Whatever, the FFA overplayed their hand, as do many extremist groups, and is generating quite a bit of publicity for the show. The ratings should improve. Which should help TLC. The higher the rating for the network, the more they can charge for ad time.

Is anyone actually losing in this drama? Dearborn is getting positive PR, TLC is getting ratings, FFA gets to beat its chest, the advertisers simply move their business elsewhere and will not lose business, and the sales reps get higher commissions.

Grump. I wish a few advertisers would grow some balls.

You won’t see any blank air time. The network will sell the ad space. And when they do season two, which they might—now, watch for product placement.

Frankly, I don’t watch reality TV, including anything on TLC. I don’t use Kayak, and my wife forbids me from undertaking any home improvements beyond vacuum cleaning. So this entire issue is quite outside my experience and expertise. Few companies like controversy; I also think it is entirely possible that TLC was not comprehensive in outlining the show when they sold advertising - perhaps they were not even sure themselves at the time how the show would unfold; it is reality TV, after all. The underlying truth might be that the viewing demographic are not key targets for either Kayak or Lowe’s, and now they look bad withdrawing.

They were mislead about the nature of the show? It is a show about life in America for Muslim families called “All American Muslim”. It doesn’t get any clearer then that.

So you’re saying it was being sold as bigotry in the first place, and those dropping ads are disappointed it’s not?

I don’t know about “misled”. But sales is sales, and when you are on commission, you try hard to say what the customer wants to hear while staying just inbounds on the truth. Again I don’t watch the show, but that is because I don’t enjoy that type of programming.

“When we received angry emails regarding our decision to advertise, I looked into the show more thoroughly.”

And saw Muslims. Muslims with kids, a Muslim football coach, a Muslim law enforcement officer, and women with and without their hair covered.

And then he figured, “Why not kowtow to these True American fundies that keep writing pissy letters?” and pulled their advertising.

The End.

I think it’s all BS. Kayak says that TLC wasn’t straight up with them. Yea, right, sure. They buckled down to the FFA. Period. Who the hell has heard of them anyway. Travelocity, who advertises on All-American Muslims BTW, has a lot more customers and a cute gnome.

Ok well I do care. I think it’s awful and they’re a nasty, bigoted company. In the end, I predict these companies will be the losers. What kind of strategy looks to LOSE customers in this economy. I’m happy to shop elsewhere.

No I’m saying that we’ll never now what someone selling TV time will say to get a signature. It could be anything. However, I don’t see anyone losing in this little kerfuffle. It might just give season 2 the green light.

Lowes and Kayak.com have lost my business, and hopefully the business of the entire american Muslim community.
