Maybe Perry wants to sink the next not-Mitt candidate before Santorum has a chance to rise.

I'm beginning to suspect that none of the lower eschelon candidates ever attack Mitt because they all know he'll be the candidate. They want to stay cool with him in the hopes that he'll choose them as a running-mate, to get the base to vote for him.

Which would kind of make sense -- he needs a non-toxic Sarah Palin, so the other candidates all want to avoid actual toxicity while proving it in their conservative rivals.

That's a good theory but I think they're all deluded to think that Romney would be dumb enough to pick any of them for the VP spot. I think he's very likely to pick somebody outside of his group for sure.

Perry is trying to get the same evangelical voters Santorum is after, so attacking him makes sense. I don't think Perry can survive long after the effort he's made in Iowa finishing fourth or fifth behind Santorum.
