While taking a few days off, I had a chance today to set up at a bird feeder. The shutter speeds were anywhere from 1/5000th to 1/8000th trying to get a good look at those fast wings. Their color changes in the light from kinda green brown to very bright purple green, or red.

Remarkable birds. When my 2 boys were about 7 and 9 (20 some years past) we lived in a very small town in the hills of central Pennsylvania. My oldest heard a noise in the garage late in the afternoon. I don’t recall the exact sound but it got us to looking. We soon found a green hummingbird on the floor in a corner, exhausted. We picked it up gently and we got mom to boil sugar water. We sat and rubbed his beak with sugar water on our fingers and soon his tongue was lapping it up quicker. Ate quite a lot. After a bit we decided he/she needed rest, the sun was down. We fixed up a shoe box with tissues and holes and put it in a warm quiet place. I had to leave early the next morning and when I came back my wife and sons told me what happened. They opened the box and it jumped up on the side and made noises. They fed it some more and it stayed right there grooming and eating. They then took it out to the back deck with the box and sugar water. It buzzed it’s wings a few times and took off. Then my wife told me what happened next. It came back, landed on the rail by the box it slept in and chirped. Chirped until they gave it more sugar water. It drank it’s fill and took off again. My boys and wife were mesmerized and just happy the bird made it. THEN it came back and landed again, chirped and then hovered near my wifes face. To this day she knows a hummingbird thanked her.
