Link on KKK site enrages charter school advocates
Norton posted a direct link to the Knights’ official Web site — where a statement supports charter schools based on reports they are segregating students — on Facebook and through a Twitter “retweet,” both actions that enraged a statewide pro-charter school organization.
He said studies indicate charter schools are creating “self-selection” segregation, or students are going to charters where students of similar ethnic background attend.
The Michigan Association of Public School Academies, the pro-charter school organization, viewed the Facebook and Twitter feeds, both posted New Year’s Day, and claimed Norton’s organization “links charter schools to the Ku Klux Klan.”
The spat between the two organizations follows passage of a state law just after Christmas uncapping the allowed number of charter schools in Michigan.
Norton testified in opposition to the bill, Senate Bill 618, before its passage.
