Judging from this article below, the "agricultural heartland" getting hammered won't be able to claim that label much longer:

Lower Crop Yields Due To Ozone A Factor In World Food Crisis

...rising background levels of ozone in the atmosphere are a likely contributor to the problem, lowering the yield of important food crops, such as wheat and soybeans. Plants can limit ozone damage for short periods of time by reducing the size of pores on their leaves called stomata. This reduces the uptake of ozone, but also carbon dioxide, which is used as the plants make food through the process of photosynthesis. Chronic exposure results in reduced photosynthesis, plant growth and yields

So yay, we get reduced crop yields and a compromised carbon sink. Double-fucked good. :(

ELIMINATE THE EPA!

This really saddens me. I was born and raised in Fresno and growing up in the 90's I can recall about 3 or 4 students in each class having asthma and relying on inhalers. I have two nephews that live there now who have asthma and by all accounts the numbers of respiratory diseases and ailments are continuing to rise. Even though I moved away many years ago this issue is still particularly sensitive for me.
It's pretty frightening driving down from the mountains into the Central Valley or into LA/Orange county seeing a thick blanket of dirty smog and realizing "I breathe that shit day and night."

re: #2 dragonfire1981

The county has to pay millions in fines to the EPA every time the air quality drops below a certain level. Something really must be done, because the air quality is unacceptable, but I'm not sure paying millions in fines benefits the area. There's got to be a better solution than that, but I can't think of one at the moment.

It's lousy right now, and I am not looking forward to this summer, when it will only get worse. I like most of the people here, but the air and the weather is for shit.

P.S. And four large shade trees got knocked down by that big ass windstorm last month, which is gonna make future summers extra shitty for me and my neighbors. :[

Air quality advocates have argued for years that the local air district's focus on fireplace burn bans ignores other major sources of industrial pollution, such as dairies, feed lots and oil rigs. "The air board's strategy is failing," said Kevin Hall, executive director of the Central Valley Air Quality Coalition.

If you've ever been in vicinity of one of those dairies, you would have absolutely no problem understanding how they contribute to poor air quality. The industrial wineries reek as well.
