You can divide facts into three types: the divine, the natural and the man-made. The first belongs to theology, the second to philosophy and the third to history. All are equally open to question. - Diderot in Le Encyclopedié

Facts are not enough. Using them well requires common sense, wisdom, ethics and restraint. All of which could be considered ‘context, connectedness, and community.’

So I don’t see what the problem is. Aren’t you using your context, your connectedness, and your community when you post here?

We’re an advocacy outfit. We make no bones about it. We argue, criticize, and advocate for changes in the way Reuters conducts its Middle East reporting. We don’t fly under a banner of being impartial or unbiased, as does Reuters.

We also don’t doctor photos to fabricate a false narrative of events. We don’t play fast and loose with the facts. And we don’t take a code of ethics we created to enhance our brand so as to maximize profit, and systematically violate it day in day out when it conflicts with our other interests.

You haven’t really answered my question. Are you saying that Reuters is an advocacy agency like you, but dishonest about it? If so, how so?

If not, in what way are they ‘systematically violating their code of ethics?’

Or is it simply because they print things you don’t agree with that makes them ‘dishonest?’

re: #2 Reuters Middle East Watch

I don’t think anyone has accused Reuters of doctoring the photos themselves, but of accepting edited photos and the descriptions attached uncritically. It’s definitely a failure of journalistic competence, but describing it inarticulately commits the same error they did.

You obviously haven’t read Reuters Trust Principles, its 500+ page Handbook of Journalism, or any of the posts on our site. Have a look at these and you can answer your own question.

You’re probably referring to the photo of Beirut taken by a Reuters stringer during the 2006 Lebanon war. The cropping of the photo of the Israeli commando aboard the Mavi Marmara with passenger-held knife, pool of blood, and another Israeli commando on the floor was performed by Reuters.

Nope. I was referring to the knife-cropping.

Can you provide proof this was done by Reuters, please?

Um, according to the blog, they admitted they made a mistake and corrected it. How is this dishonest?
