Art and Microorganisms collide
This youtube channel is my favorite collection of microscope videos. I figure that some other lizards might like a little antidote for all the anti-science BS being spread lately. This user has combined masterful technique with fascinating subjects to make some of the best microscopic movies I have seen.
I recommend them all, in HD. Here are a couple of my favorites:
In this first one the subject is a Ciliate (the famous Paramecium) that is mostly transparent, covered in cilia, and has a number of different organelles. The use of polarized light by the microscopist has highlighted some structures and made others almost disappear. The effect is that the organism appears to be a sort of ghostly container filled with glowing orbs and transparent lenses.
The next video shows some rather active ciliates of a different species. A different microscopic technique highlights different types of structures than the first video did, gives them a “pseudo-3d” effect, and allows the colors to really show.
