I wonder how different this situation would play out if we were talking about say, Kosher meals instead.

Kosher is more complicated, and there is not a large enough population of observant Jewish students in public schools to justify it.

But with the Orthodox population increasing, and the cost of yeshiva tuition going up-up-up, it may become an option in the future.

The cafeteria in the building where I work (in Dearborn) does not provide halal.

I've been watching All-American Muslim. It's inconceivable that anyone should think the meals shouldn't be Halal.

It's looks a heck of a lot better, too, than the swill that is served in my child's school. We're not Muslim, but if they served what's in the picture above, she'd eat the lunch provided at school.

I don't think that Halal prohibits mixing meat and dairy, as kosher does, so you could have a halal menu that includes everything that school kids are already used to, except that you substitute halal turkey pastrami for bacon. It's not necessary to offer exotic Middle Eastern cuisine.

That illustration, which BTW is just a random "Halal meal" that I found on Google image search, NOT a typical menu item at the Dearborn school cafeteria, looks so delicious maybe I will make something like it for dinner.

You're correct, there's no prohibition on mixing meat & dairy for us.

In NYC I couldn't always find American style halal meats because most of the stores were small neighborhood outfits run by people from other countries who cut meat differently than we do and don't eat the same foods. And goat, they love goat—yuck!

The first time I ordered a whole chicken cut up, they didn't warn me that they also give you the head & feet. I almost had a freaking heart attack when I got home and stuck my hand in the bag—I shrieked, dropped the bag, and jumped back about 3 feet with my heart racing before my brain was able to process what it was seeing, LOL. From then on I made sure to tell them that I did NOT want the head & feet.

Here in NJ I can find pretty much everything I'm used to as the stores cater to a large African American Muslim community. I have access to beef t-bone steaks & ribs, beef pepperoni, beef bacon, turkey legs & cutlets, whole or properly cut up chickens you can buy in parts (breasts, legs, wings), and all sorts of lunch meats (roast beef, turkey pastrami, turkey ham, smoked turkey breast, beef bologna, etc.)
