“Reproductive rights” means a lot more than the right to have an abortion.

WTF? In this day and age?

My nephew had a very fertile girlfriend with the IQ and reasoning ability of a houseplant. She was lower than normal IQ and received social security because she was unable to work or function without assistance. My sister used to take this girlfriend in for birth control shots every x amount of months because she knew the responsibility of raising the girlfriend’s (and her son’s) child would certainly defer to her.

The girl in this particular case already has another child someone is caring for because she is unable to do so. I think when you are directly burdened with the responsibility of other people’s reproductive choices as in this case - yes - you do have some say so. Maybe not sterilization / abortion, but I don’t think it’s harsh or extreme to prevent her from reproducing willy-nilly simply because she has sex.

re: #3 theheat

I understand what you are saying but there is a difference between using something like Depoprovera (the shots) vs. premanently removing a woman’s ability to ever have children. Me, I don’t want kids so I’d be ok with that. The vast majority of women would not.

And yes, Sergey, there is much more to”reproductive rights” than abortion. But ask a GOPer about that and abortion is as far as you get. Then again, women, in a typical GOPer’s mind, shouldn’t be making decisions about their own reproduction anyway…that should fall to a man.

That judge should be retired. Pulling that sterilization order out of his a… er out of the air was judicial malpractice of the most dangerous sort.

That having been said my mind turned to the deep ethical dilemmas prevalent in taking choice (in many contexts) away from the mentally ill, particularly reproductive rights. My mind reels and my heart aches at the thought of being a judge in a case like that, I must admit.

Quoted for truth..

Abortion politics get complicated when the pregnant person is mentally ill or very young — but when we start taking away the right to choose based on our own view of mental competence, we go down a very slippery slope.

And slippery slopes are not good places to be.

Ice, thanks for posting this!

What.The.Fuck?

That judge needs to, at the very least, get a serious tongue-lashing from the state’s judicial oversight board. If he’s not that lucky, than his ass needs to be removed from the bench.

There’s just some things that a judge has no business adjudicating, not like this.
