In order to ask them to renounce shariah, he would first have to ask them if they were muslim, which I believe is a violation of federal law.

Indeed it is, just as asking someone about country of ancestry or nationality during the hiring process is a violation of Federal laws. I wish more people knew that.

This statement also tells me that either Gingrich’s much ballyhooed intelligence is over rated, or…

Nope. He clearly knows better, as one of my early Pages pointed out.

…he’s cynically chumming evil waters hoping for a big boost from bigots.

THIS. He’s been chumming those waters for at least a couple of years now, apparently ever since he decided he could be a contender and jumped back into the mix. His production (along with Citizens United) of the scare film America at Risk, his cynical taking advantage of the Park51/anti-mosque hysteria to raise funds, etc. all make that crystal clear.

He is the absolute worst sort of opportunist. If he was ever elected president, God forbid, I have no doubt there would be government the likes of which we’ve never seen before. I hope his political career is is destroyed beyond redemption this year by his political enemies.

It isn’t about shariah as much as it is about the perception of what shariah is.

Jewish law has long been regarded as rather benign- until now as the fundamentalists are changing that perception by way of their actions.

Shariah is not the version we see in Pakistan on the six o’clock news or other more radicalized places or endorsed by the lunatic fringe- as much as Geller, Gingrich, et al would have you believe it is.
