Nothing personal, but Margaret Wente is prone to taking every opportunity to critique non white non Christian cultures, from the Inuit to the SE Asians, there’s a history of columns behind her.

I don’t take it personally- this is an opinion piece.

What interested me was the distinction she made re the economic status of those who commit these kind of crimes. The fact these crimes span the economic spectrum only highlights the reality that education is the only way eliminate the very real problem.

Of course, education is also a cultural matter- and educating women in some of these societies raises all kind of other issues.

I’m less concerned about the long term- self imposed isolation has an expiration date. However, the near and medium term will see little if any change.

re: #1 Thanos

It’s more than a history of columns, which is why I updinged. See, the way to go here is to write a nice rebuttal to Margaret Wente. Behind her columns is the perspective of British culture, from which she criticizes every other culture.

I will try to limit this to a few paragraphs, but there are enough volumes to this argument to shame Will Durant.

The other day I ran into a woman from New Zealand, proudly stating that she was a citizen under the Crown. As we conversed, she mentioned that she could not believe the palpable racism in America, it’s in the air. I replied that the reason it’s in the air is that we had our slaves in our country, whereas Britain had its slaves and plantations, which were much more cruel than the US, in other parts of the world—such as the Caribbean. And Britain had maybe 500,000 more slaves than the US.

But, she replied, the Africans had already enslaved their people—as if England was just being generous by taking these excess Africans off the continent. What can you say to that logic? That the Crown is without fault, that the rest of the world is uncivilized?

How about this—to Wente: What is Lord-like about the House of Lords? I mean Jews know to some degree Who’s Who in Nazi Germany, the House of Lords is pretty much a Who’s Who of the descendants of slave traders and plantation owners. How are these people Noble, with whom are they Peers? For goodness sake, Elizabethan England survived through piracy. And they say they sent the criminals to Australia? Not enough.

See, I’d go that route. And it really needs to be said, often.
