"This is a story Romney does not want you to know."

Ironically, I think Romney is the one who brought it to light originally, thinking it would make him seem like Clark Griswold. To animal lovers like me, it just made him look like an unfeeling creep.

However, Obama doesn't get big points from me with Bo. Can't stand when people go spend a small fortune on a dog from a breeder, while there are countless awesome dogs waiting to die in shelters.

I've been searching the net for the origins and all I could find was this from 2007:

Jun 28, 2007 8:45am
[Link: abcnews.go.com...]

ABC News’ Jake Tapper Reports: Republican presidential candidate former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., has angered animal rights activists for strapping his dog to the roof of his car on a family trip from Boston to Ontario, Canada.

According to the Boston Globe, in one of the family’s 12-hour drives to their family’s cottage in Canada over 25 years ago, Romney strapped a dog carrier to the roof of the car for the whole trip — with the family Irish setter, Seamus, inside.

Seamus protested in a scatological way, going to the bathroom on the roof of the car.

Animal rights activists reached by TIME Magazine said the tale seems a little cruel.

"It is commonsense that any dog who’s under extreme stress might show that stress by losing control of his bowels: that alone should have been sufficient indication that the dog was, basically, being tortured," Time quoted Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals as saying.

Newkirk said it was "a lesson in cruelty that was … wrong for [his children] to witness."

I haven't come across any articles that state Romney originally reported it, but let me know if you do.

I am not a person who has ever or will ever buy a dog from a breeder, but I don't condemn people who do. I encourage people to go to shelters. I agree that breeding is awful. I've been active with the ASPCA and coordinated a spay/neuter program in my neighborhood for cats. I was able to get our local city to give us a grant for the project and worked with the Humane Society's mobile unit to do the spaying. People hate the ASPCA, too, but I think they're wonderful.

Another thing with Obama's Dog.

They needed an Allergy-Friendly Dog, as I think either Sasha or Malia have some sort of pet allergy. So, a breeder was nearly inevitable because of that.

I forgot about that. Thanks PLL!

If the dog cage was properly shielded, and potty stops were made, as I am sure the people would have needed and allowed for the dog, then there would be no difference between the roof and inside the car.

I call bullshit. We can do better than this kind of critique of the Mitt. (bad pun)

The dog isn't really stifled just cuz he doesn't get his own Wikipedia page.

As I recall, Bo is a mutt. The president made a point of that, for which he of course had members of the media concern-trolling about whether or not it was appropriate for him to have said, "He's a mutt, like me." And I think they wound up with Bo because one of the girls is allergic to most dogs. Something about Bo--I think he doesn't shed, or something.

Did you miss this?

Several scientists who analyzed the event noted possible problems; Seamus would have likely had around ten pounds per square foot of air pressure pressing against his head during the trip, which, combined with the turbulence of air flow around the sides of the crate, could cause fatigue and dehydration of the eyes.[5]

It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out you don't strap a living animal to the top of a car in a crate. The dog was so distressed, it had diarrhea which came down over the windows. Romney hosed down the car and the dog and then put the wet dog back in the crate on the hood for the second half of the journey. This is a man who doesn't deserve a pet, in my book.

If the story goes into the dustbin of the internet, it sure is.

Bo is a neutered, male, Portuguese Water Dog picked because of his hypo-allergenic fur for Mahlia, I think. But I think what you're mixing up is that they were talking for awhile about getting a dog and that's when Obama said something to the effect, "I'd like to get a mutt like me." which caused some sort of terrible ruckus in which Obama was depicted as the devil (or some such thing). But in the end, they decided on Bo.

I didn't miss it. I also heard Romney explain that the cage was well shielded, enclosed, from wind. The "scientists" presumably assume opened.

Diarrhea can occur from many things. Why don't we accuse him of feeding the dog crap too?

How?

re: #13 Obdicut

Well, you could put it up backwards, so the grate was facing the rear. That would be no worse than the back of a pickup truck. Still, if the dog is shitting itself because of something you're doing, stop it!

re: #13 Obdicut

How?

One takes flat sheets of a reasonably rigid material, like plastic or plywood or even a tent type material and one covers the front and sides, but there are too many fastening methods to list here.

Does that help?
