Anybody have a source for that 2008 Obama quote Hatch mentions up there?

Seems a bit suspect to me.

Does Hatch have a source for that quote? I wouldn't spend too much time searching for something that probably doesn't exist. (Do you get the impression from this that Hatch believes the globe is warming? That would be new.)

I don't recall Obama having said that too. And honest it's laughable to me that Hatch is accusing Obama of being arrogant when his own party has Romney and Gingrich as its front runners. Exampifiers of humility the both of them.

I think most Americans would agree that the Gospels are concerned with weightier matters than effective tax rates.

No, no they really aren't, not the Gospels anyway.

If you discard the books of Paul the bible starts making a hell of a lot more sense...just saying...

34Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

35For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

36Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

37Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

38When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

39Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

40And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

41Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

42For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:

43I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

44Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

45Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

These self proclaimed "Christian Right" people need to read the Gospel of Matthew again, if I were them I'd be pretty worried...

I wrote something up on this the other day as a number of media outlets misleadingly spun the President's Prayer Breakfast address as: "Obama: Jesus would back my tax-the-rich policy."

I'll just copy & paste in the part of my post that addressed that:

'The only place the President seems to have directly referenced taxes in his National Prayer Breakfast address was here, where he makes a secular argument for shared responsibility, follows it by saying he finds encouragement toward that general principle in his own faith, and finally references two other faiths:

And when I talk about shared responsibility, it’s because I genuinely believe that in a time when many folks are struggling, at a time when we have enormous deficits, it’s hard for me to ask seniors on a fixed income, or young people with student loans, or middle-class families who can barely pay the bills to shoulder the burden alone. And I think to myself, if I’m willing to give something up as somebody who’s been extraordinarily blessed, and give up some of the tax breaks that I enjoy, I actually think that’s going to make economic sense.

But for me as a Christian, it also coincides with Jesus’s teaching that “for unto whom much is given, much shall be required.” It mirrors the Islamic belief that those who’ve been blessed have an obligation to use those blessings to help others, or the Jewish doctrine of moderation and consideration for others.

Later he says:

Our goal should not be to declare our policies as biblical. It is God who is infallible, not us. Michelle reminds me of this often. (Laughter.) So instead, it is our hope that people of goodwill can pursue their values and common ground and the common good as best they know how, with respect for each other.

Wait, wait, is Hatch promoting a SEPARATION of church and state?

7 Fenris  Sat, Feb 4, 2012 4:28:52pm

Just saying, because I'd expect him to be happy to have Jesus in office.

It's this. As you can see, in context it's much less ME ME ME than Hatch suggests.

America, this is our moment. This is our time.

Our time to turn the page on the policies of the past. Our time to bring new energy and new ideas to the challenges we face. Our time to offer a new direction for this country that we love.

The journey will be difficult. The road will be long.

I face this challenge with profound humility, and knowledge of my own limitations.

But I also face it with limitless faith in the capacity of the American people.

Because if we are willing to work for it, and fight for it, and believe in it, then I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on Earth.

This was the moment - this was the time - when we came together to remake this great nation so that it may always reflect our very best selves, and our highest ideals.

If Orrin Hatch weren't Orrin Hatch, he would have referenced Canute, instead, which would have been funnier.
