In a sense, I'm glad this happened. It puts Russia+China in the public record. If we must have a proxy war with these assholes, I can't think of a better one to pick. Russia+China can veto in the UN. They can't veto NATO. They can't veto the Arab League. If Obama can get Turkey on board, it's over.

If this happens, it will be a defeat for the NeoSovs+China. Iran will definitely back down. And the US will look good in the Mid East.

But again, this endgame needs to look more like Libya and less like Egypt.

BTW, as much as I disagree with Obama domestically (I'm to his left, considerably and bailing out Goldman Sachs was just wrong), he's been batting 1000 in foreign policy. Of course, Clinton+Panetta+Biden come in for some credit as well.

The US Air Force has been actively involved in "liberating" and/or "protecting" people in that corner of the world since 1991. I've been married to an AF pilot for most of those years, and frankly, the community can't tolerate any more wars to "liberate" others. The divorce and PTSD rates are out of control, and the military is broke.

I really hope I misread your post and that you aren't advocating for armed intervention in Syria.

Sigh, perhaps if we actually had our own house in order I might feel more inclined to support interventionist efforts overseas designed to force others to adopt our ways "or else" (I kinda doubt it, but still, it is a possibility).

When was it decided that we had the right to attack and massively destroy the infrastructure of other countries simply because we don't like their government? Isn't it THEIR government and shouldn't they have the right to determine their own fate as we did ours? Didn't we spend decades propping up half of these dictatorships we are now attempting to destroy?

I'm scared that someday in the not too distant future we are going to regret this an awful lot for helping to set the precedent that it is ok for the U.N. to use massive and overwhelming armed force against another countries legitimate army in support of armed rebel factions.

That same kind of justification could be turned around and used against us in a heartbeat. Honestly though, I think it would be the height of Irony since we so richly deserve it anyway...

This should never be an easy decision to make, but I don't think there is an argument from principle to be made against any and all such interventions. When a minority is being slaughtered by an overwhelming force, intervention is an option.

We don't need a war to strangle Assad, but with China and Russia supporting every despot on the planet the dictators are safe.
