Verizon Teams Up With Redbox to Offer Video Streaming Service
On Monday Verizon announced a deal and Coinstar, the company that owns the Redbox DVD rental business. Redbox allows people to easily rent movies through kiosks it owns in grocery stores and other retail locations. As part of the new joint venture the companies will develop an on-demand video streaming service. The companies will introduce the new service in the second half of 2012, the companies said in a press release.
The new subscription service will be offered to anyone in the U.S., regardless of whether or not they have Verizon broadband or Fios TV service. Customers will be able to access the service on multiple devices, including TVs, tablets and smartphones. Redbox will also continue to operate its DVD kiosks.
This will only matter if Verizon/Redbox is able to secure deals for better content than Netflix.
