Courthouse Shooting in Middletown Leaves Gunman Dead
A man who was convicted last week of harassing the mayor’s daughter was killed on Wednesday by security officers after he walked into a courthouse and started firing a 12-gauge shotgun, according to the authorities and court documents.
¶ The man, Timothy Mulqueen of Middletown, opened fire in the courthouse lobby about 9 a.m. Officers returned fire as people dove under desks and scrambled for the rear door, officials said.
¶ “He had more rounds for the shotgun, and had he made it past the officers, who knows what mayhem might have ensued,” said David Bookstaver, a spokesman for the state office in charge of New York’s local court system. “It appears at this point that the officers may have saved countless lives.”
¶ Mr. Mulqueen, 43, died at a hospital. One officer suffered a graze wound to the arm, and two others were treated for shock.
