There is a long standing argument among studio engineers about who invented the stutter edit - which likely means it was a collaborative chain of accidents and luck. There is little argument, however, that BT’s seminal “Movement in Still Life” was the first album to take it to the masses in a manner that forced musicians to take notice.
The stutter edit is as much a part of music today as a trill or a riff, and it shows no sign of disappearing anytime soon.
