Dahlander, who did not return several phone messages from The Associated Press, told the newspaper that the district often holds gender-specific events.

“It’s not out of the ordinary,” Dahlander said.

I believe he has put his finger on the problem.

They shouldn't concern their pretty little heads with the men stuff. Bees, fluffy kittens - that's more like it.

I think the girls should have been taken to see Red Tails, but on a different day. My mom was a middle school counselor and she said she would not have wanted to worry about 11-year old boys and girls in the dark.

mrl - show them no trust, they'll not respect what it means.
Such a trip with both sexes is always an exercise in learning and understanding boundaries, trust etc.
And if they're not staffed enough to pull out the odd kissing couple, then they're also not staffed enough for an boys only outing.

When are we going to drag these clods kicking & screaming into the 20th century? (& no, that was not a typo).

The field trip to see "Red Tails" cost Dallas schools about $57,000, which came from federal funds for low-income students, the newspaper reported.

For a tenth of the cost the district could have invested in some good video projection equipment and just rented it on blu-ray.

Eleven-year-olds? Where does your mother teach? Where I'm from, eleven-year-old boys still think girls are gross, and would way rather watch a war movie than fool around. The 6th-grade girls have caught on to flirting but don't have anybody to do it with. No way would there be hanky-panky at a movie about fighter pilots.
