Saudi Should Free Kashgari, Says Rights Group: via ArabianBusiness.com
Saudi Arabia’s highest official clerics have declared Kashgari guilty of apostasy based on his now-deleted tweets and called for him to be put to death.
I guess I was wrong about the show trial assumption. Looks like the Saudi clerics don’t need those procedural niceties to proclaim a verdict. However, the “civilian” authorities still seem to be planning a trial:
“The public prosecutor in Jeddah is filing a lawsuit against Hamza Kashgari on charges of disrespecting God and insulting Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) in his Twitter account,” sources told Al Hayat daily.
The sources said that public prosecutor in the Red Sea city of Jeddah was likely to summon people who expressed support or agreed with him on the social network, the daily reported yesterday.
“The public prosecutor, as the attorney for the society, has the right to summon anyone who encouraged the defendant or who is connected to matters that motivated his action,” Abdul Aziz Al Zamel, a legal consultant, said, quoted by Al Hayat.
What’s that? Not only the alleged “apostate” is to be summoned, but anybody who voiced support for him?
I hereby voice my full-throated support for Mr Kashgari and his right to express his opinions without fear of execution. Come and get me.
Note that I refuse to file this series of posts under “Religion”, or “Islam”. This incident has nothing to do with Islam, and everything to do with tyranny.
