AT&T Ends Unlimited Data Plans?

AT&T used to boast that it had unlimited data plans - which are useful to those with smartphones and utilize data intensive applications. That includes streaming video, music, and other similar applications. They would tout it in advertising.

No longer.

AT&T is effectively ending their unlimited data plans. In fact, they’ll slow the download speeds for unlimited 3G and 4G phone users who exceed 3GB and 4G LTE users to exceed 5GB of data in a given month. Previously, AT&T throttled back data plans of those who were in the top 5% of data users in their respective markets.

I think that AT&T has a huge problem, and they’ve had capacity issues for a long time, which is why Consumer Reports and others have slammed them for reliability and access times.

We promised you unlimited data, now we're offering unlimited timeframes to access any of that data.

We at AT&T believe in providing the best possible coverage without wasting resources on frivolous things such as "infrastructure." We save the money you're tempted to stop sending us for truly important expenses such as marketing, lobbying, and most important of all, keeping the interiors of our yachts painted with real gold fresh daily.

It's not like AT&T is short of money. They are projected to be one of the most profitable US companies in 2012. But for some reason they have never really adopted an aggressive approach to their infrastructure and have instead funneled profits towards marketing.

Another report indicates that AT&T had basically eliminated unlimited data plans for new customers previously - this affects those existing customers who were grandfathered in with the so-called "unlimited" plans.

I think that's actually worse.

Fact is that AT&T hasn't invested in infrastructure and was unprepared for the influx of customers who sought out iPhones when AT&T was the sole provider with them.

Now?

There's no reason to go with AT&T when the other providers have them as well.

Exactly. The other carriers have no immediate plans to follow suit, which means they will sit back and watch how this goes for AT&T.
