I’m thinking 1964, 1972.

I wouldn’t say that because it’s looking like Romney will get the GOP nomination, and while he’s stumbled, he’s anti-Obama enough to turn in a fair enough showing. But if Frothy gets the nom, 64, 72, or 84 could look respectable by comparison.

The only way the Republicans avoid 1964 is if the South goes with Romney. Romney isn’t taking Massachusetts. Maybe Romney gets Montana and Idaho too. If I’m wrong, I’ve been way too laid back on this.

This paints a rosy picture that I don’t think really exists; Obama needs the minority voters who were so enthusiastic in ‘08, or he might lose.

re: #4 JEA62

So you’ve met bunches of people who will be voting for this crop of Republicans? You’ve met minorities so disillusioned that they’re staying home? You’ve met independent voters convinced of this new Republican message?

Check out Republican voter turnout in the primaries. But if worry gets you to the polls, then you’ve got to worry. Me, I like short lines. His popular vote total will be less, his electoral vote total will be impressive.
