The real question is not whether teenagers can be vicious, we all know the can be, but whether the school actually does anything about this.

I read the KOS entry this morning and the problem I have is how these mean girls found out she was using birth control. The writer, whom I know is really upset, but can’t write a cohesive story to save her life, writes this:

The day of the trip, the prescription medication was given to the doctor who was traveling with the students. He would hand out the medication as prescribed. For beantown girl, this was every morning after breakfast. She never thought a thing about it- neither did I. They returned from their trip and went back to the daily grind of high school…

And then

I asked my daughter how these girls found out about her being on birth control. It had to have come from someone on the trip, but we have no idea who. It doesn’t matter, really, I just would like to know…

I have to wonder sometimes about adults. IT DOES MATTER. An employee of the school was supposedly the only one with access to this medication, I surmise because of some ridiculous law about drug-taking, prescription meds, teens, blah blah blah. Meanwhile, if the teen was allowed to dispense her own medication, particularly non-mind-altering meds, no one would have been the wiser.

The buck stops at the school and yet through that multi-paragraph rant, the parent never once questioned this. Even stating it doesn’t matter. Medical records are private things. It’s why we have HIPAA. She needs to get down to that school and demand to know how her daughter’s private, protected medical info got leaked. Did the doctor or a teacher talk about it? Did someone notice the pills? Birth control containers are fairly obvious and it was up to the doctor to keep that private, too. While I’m generally against suing school systems, if she finds negligence here, she should call a lawyer. Teen girls kill themselves over this shit.
