His comparison of women to livestock is pretty fucked up.

His comparison of women to livestock sums up the fanatical anti-abortion view of women perfectly. It's fucked up, but not surprising at all.

Words fail me. That little anecdote about the "salt of the earth" chicken guy was a serious WTF moment. But not as WTF as comparing women to livestock and forcing them to carry dead fetuses. The funny thing is, I'm actually in favor of banning late-term abortions (with exceptions for extreme cases), but I am NOT in favor of this kind of blatant misogyny.

You tell those folks down there when they quit killing babies, they can have every chicken I’ve got.

WHAT DOES THIS EVEN MEAN?!

Chickens!

How do we get healthcare without chickens?

It means he'll give me a chicken and I'll use it to demonstrate what it's like to carry a dead baby inside your body by shoving it up his rectum.

He has empathy for animals. Women, not so much.

Well, see, "salt of the earth" people love to pit chickens against each other in bloody painful fights in which they are maimed and killed and God is all cool with that, in fact God comes to these chicken fights personally and blesses them and even puts down bets. It's the way the world is because of sin, pain and blood you see, even childbirth is like that because of sin, but chicken fighting is still acceptable, see, because animals are just property and it's OK to do anything you want with them, and it seems women are property too because the Bible says so, but every human sperm and egg is sacred, so what this salt of the earth young man is saying is that if they will just stop killing fetuses that have no chance to live, he will stop killing chickens for sport and will give them to those squeamish tree-hugging liberals who are for animal rights and against chicken fighting but for baby-killing to keep as pets.

Got it?

Salt of the earth = fundie. There's really nothing much about them to like. And being far from harmless and minding their own business, they support whack legislation like this that negatively impacts everyone else.

"Salt of the earth" Makes me think of this scene from Blazing Saddles.

Yeah, that seems to cover it. This is a stupid, ill-considered, and dangerous bill.

Stupid, ill-considered, and dangerous is putting it mildly. It's misogynistic, hateful, and offensive on every level.

Progressive Activism Is Bubbling Up Across the Country — Here’s What’s Happening That the Corporate Media Can’t Be Bothered to
This was a week that exemplified the historic moment in which we live. We will look back at these times and see the seeds of a national revolt against concentrated wealth that puts profits ahead of people and the planet. Mike Lux, who authored a history of the movements of the 1960s, wrote this week that when he researched his book he "was ...

Why Hate Groups Continue to Exist in 2013
Fifty years ago, African-Americans were targets of the Ku Klux Klan's violent hate agenda as the Civil Rights movement gained steam in desegregating public institutions across the South. The Birmingham church bombings, which killed four little girls in 1963, was one of the most violent crimes the Ku Klux Klan has been responsible for in attacking Black Americans (on Friday, the president signed ...

Obamacare Will Be a Debacle — for Republicans
Well, the preliminary numbers for CA are in -- and they're looking very good, with costs coming in below expectations. At this point, it looks as if this thing is indeed going to work. And think about the political dynamics. Because the Supreme Court decided to let states opt out of the Medicaid expansion, some states -- notably Texas -- will have a ...

An Interplanetary GPS Using Pulsar Signals
Spacecraft could determine their position anywhere in the solar system to within five kilometres using signals from x-ray pulsars, say astronomers. Navigating in space is a tricky business. The usual method relies on Earth-based tracking stations to work out a spacecraft's distance using radio waves, a process that is accurate to within a metre or so. That's fine for the radial distance, but ...

4 Reasons ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ Is Secretly About Drugs
Nice, right? Anyway, here's my thesis: Raiders of the Lost Ark is not an action-adventure movie about an archaeologist who plays by his own rules and saves the day. Instead, the film is an exploration of Marion Ravenwood's crippling drug addiction. An addiction that was born from her unhealthy relationship and continued association with Indiana Jones. Is it true? Who cares. Can I prove ...

WAPO’s Glenn Kessler Gives Three “Pinocchios” To Claim of Doctored Emails
It has long been part of the Washington game for officials to discredit a news story by playing up errors in a relatively small part of it. Pfeiffer gives the impression that GOP operatives deliberately tried to "smear the president" with false, doctored e-mails. But the reporters involved have indicated they were told by their sources that these were summaries, taken from notes ...
