1 What, me worry?  Thu, Mar 15, 2012 6:47:17am

I was a vegetarian for about 6 years, but had to abandon it because of constant anemia. It got so bad, I started falling asleep at my desk at work. I quite literally couldn't keep my head up. I only had maybe 3 useful waking hours out of the day. So how bad is that for you?

Women have a difficult time as vegetarians because of menses. Something I never realized. I don't know what a doctor would say about it, but I know for me, it was awful. And nothing can replace the iron you get from meat. Not legumes, not nuts, not iron from vegetables.

Besides, humans are omnivores. We were built to eat both vegetables and meats.

The one thing I noticed about the veggie diet is that my migraines vanished completely. It was the first time in my life I didn't have those headaches.

Anyway, I think moderation is probably the answer - to most all things.

I found this interesting because of what's going on with me healthwise. Just yesterday, I was shown my cholesterol results and they were bad. I've been started on a low dose statin, but I've also got to change my eating habits.

My father had a major heart attack at age 54 and required a triple bypass surgery. Since then, he has been an extremely low fat vegetarian and has actually reversed his heart disease as well as has wonderfully low cholesterol levels, all done with diet. Since I have small children, I really can't go that drastic because the kids need the fats, etc. So, I'm going to cut out the red meat, do more low fat vegetarian meals, eat chicken breasts, try to learn to like fish, and stop eating my home baked cookies. It sucks.

Any study done by asking people what they ate has a problem. Most people (myself included) can't remember what they had for dinner last night let alone how frequently they eat beef. I would view this as a jumping off point for other studies.

Well, they should do a study in Milwaukee where wolfing down raw ground beef on dark rye bread with onion, black pepper and salt is a regional tradition.
