One does not want to be the target of a French manhunt. They aren't nearly as gentle as they profess. Nor do they care about the standards they expect others to uphold. They will find this person, and if this person is tied to an organization, they will find that too.

"Authorities said at the time that forensic analysis showed that the same weapon was used in the shootings in Montauban and Toulouse."

This is so utterly angering - if the implications are correct and it IS the same perpetrator/s, then had they done the job right investigating those two events, those children would still be alive...

re: #2 Archangelus

Part of the problem is that France in undergoing a small civil war, the news of which they are suppressing, and doing a good job of it.

And that would fall under disregarding freedom of the press. Ethics are a convenience, a distant second to practicality.

Update: bad to worse - four are now being reported killed, including a 30 year old Israeli teacher, his two 3 and 6 year old children and another 10 year old boy.

Those who kill children are the worse scum. Killers of children are "would be" killers of a brighter future for the world.

Who would be behind such a thing?

8 CuriousLurker  Mon, Mar 19, 2012 6:50:00am

How horrifying. Also, how strange if the shootings are linked to those from last week. The AP/Yahoo and CNN reports say the that the paratroopers who were shot last week were of Arab/North African origin.

I hope to God that France doesn't have another Breivik on its hands.

The comments at Haaretz are utterly disgusting. Jewish children "deserved it" because of "Israel's policy against Palestinians." Haaretz comments are moderated, I know because I have submitted many comments to Haaretz talkbacks and have NEVER had one published.

I'm waiting for the comments at YNet to suggest that the children "deserved it" because they are "Haredi." So far they seem to be just blaming the victims because they live in France.

What a horrible crime. I wonder if Iran is behind it.

Looks like the shooter may also have been the guy who shot a couple of French Paratroopers recently. The paratroopers were also minorities.

They were of Morroccan descent. A third soldier who was killed out of uniform was from Haiti. This looks a lot more like a white supremacist than a Muslim fanatic.

Over at the Fever Swamp, they are in no doubt about the identity of the perp:
[Arab Muslim] Gunman kills 4 outside Jewish school in France
Not only have they identified the shooter as a Muslim, they've narrowed it down to an "Arab" Muslim rather than, say, a Persian, Indonesian, or Pushtun Muslim.

Another possible angle:
Le Point has a story about a group of Nazi sympathizers within the 17th parachute regiment, the murdered soldiers' unit. The men were photographed giving a Nazi salute in front of Hitler's portrait. They were dismissed after the picture was published. Le Point cites the shooter's familiarity with weapons and coolness as possible indications of a connection to the recent shootings.

I've noticed something else: The soldier who was shot by himself was out of uniform and could not have been identifiable as a soldier except to someone who knew him. Yet another possible connection is the use of the .45 caliber handgun. This is relatively rare in France, but is popular with special forces, of which the 17th is a supporting unit.

17 Shiplord Kirel  Mon, Mar 19, 2012 9:29:33am

Guardian, March 15th and Le Monde, March 16th.

The three soldiers killed in the earlier attacks were identified as sergeant Mohamed Legouad, 26, corporal Abel Chenoulf, 24; and sergeant Imad Ibn-Ziaten, 30. This is looking more like a "counter-jihad" neo-nazi operation every minute.

In any case, you can bet your last centime the cashiered Nazis are being rounded up and are now or soon will be in the tender loving care of the French military police. We may get some answers fast. Apparently only one of the rats in directly involved, so the others should spill their guts in short order if they know anything.

Oh - wordless.

I pray the perpetrators are caught and brought to justice.
