How to get the story you want
I have to admit I have a slight advantage on evaluating this story—I’ve been grocery shopping for over 20 years now, and I know the ins and outs.
However, this story annoyed me. Yes, actually, if you live in Manhattan, shop at a grocery story that delivers to your door, insist on eating only the most expensive cuts of meat, and eat alone but buy the family size, cooking at home will cost more than eating out.
However, as a homemaker, it annoyed me that they compared a $3.99 bag of salad with a salad serving in the restaurant, for example. In my grocery stores, $3.99 is the big bag. Not the family size bag, but the aunts and uncles coming to dinner bag (they fail to calculate dressing and toppings, though.) And, really, are we now all incapable of chopping our own salad?
Most families save the expensive cuts for special dinners and occasional treats. Does ribeye steak cost $16 a pound where you are? If I buy a steak at $8 a pound, that’s for a very fancy meal for us. Most families eat hamburger and chicken (you can get a whole chicken for a LOT less than the $18 for a whole chicken they paid, like $14 a chicken less) a lot for just this reason. However, it is important to acknowledge that normal mortals can’t get the cuts that are sold in restaurants. The ribeye you buy in a restaurant doesn’t compare to the ribeye you buy at Safeway.
They calculated potatoes at $3. Even if you buy the gourmet baby potatoes, that’s at least 2 people worth of potatoes. Did you throw out half the potatoes to compare that to a single serving of potatoes? Same goes for the carrots. $3 is a couple pounds of baby carrots. All of the prices were for an entire package of that item, so unless you intend to throw the food out, it’s an invalid comparison.
(Note: I have no idea what a bunch of asparagus cost. I don’t eat asparagus.)
So, if you shop at expensive stores, buy the best cuts of meat, discover that half of the family size package has gone bad so you must discard it, and buy things as far prepared as possible, this might be true.
Also, if you are the family chef and you’re trying to talk your significant other into taking you out to eat, this whole conversation never happened.
