Many of them know full well what the Nazis did and, for what is probably too significant a number of them, that is also what they celebrate when they cheer on the SS veterans.

Have these people not read history books about what the Nazis did 70 years ago?

The Baltic states have held onto a Germanic identity for a very long time, and set themselves in contrast with the Slavs around them. When German moved east, a lot of people saw them as liberators. They also resonated with the ethnic nationalism of Nazi thinking. Whether or not that would acceptance of the whole of Nazi ideology, I can't say. I suspect in the current day you've got the equivalent compartmentalization of Confederacy fans: you've got the sentimentalists that want to gloss over the horrendous details and focus on the "liberty and struggle" narrative, and the dog whistlers for whom the nostalgia is a wholesale acceptance of that bigotry of a different age.

Their choice was Hitler or Stalin... after 10+ years of Stalin's domination and hundreds of thousands of people getting exiled to Siberia, the Nazis didn't seem so bad.

Stalin was, arguably, much worse than Hitler. He's certainly perceived as much worse in Eastern Europe.

I would argue that they're equally evil on the moral scale. That said, Hitler is responsible for many more victims, so it can be argued that on the "harm" scale Hitler is worse.

PS: and undoubtedly Hitler would kill many more tens of millions had he not been stopped.

The show "Nazi collaborators" on the military channel is a great show if you want to see what motivated people to side with the Nazis. The Nazis did a great job exploiting nationalism especially in Eastern Europe.

I love to see these guys get flipped off by Jack Tramiel.

This.

Not that Stalin should be left off the hook (or Lenin, for that matter), but it's easy to forget that it wasn't in the Nazi plan to stop purging people...their butcher's bill was just what they achieved in a decade.

They also did a great job, like the Mob, of placing individuals in the vice of a double-bind. For many, and this happened overnight, there was no way out.

Yep. Anyhow, I am always happy to say with some pride that my mom's dad's cousins were part of the Partisans in Yugoslavia.
