Do you figure they used the lying/skullduggery to reassure those who think that, by "championing" Trayvon Martin, that they are swinging FROM the right... (& by which I mean "FOX News: Just business as usual", not "the right is always dishonest, etc.")? (Just grasping at straws over here...)

That does not matter. Dishonest reporting is dishonest reporting. NBC' actions were wrong and inappropriate. There is no justification for what they did.

Putting it down to "an error made in the production process" is an utter cop-out, however. This is beyond a firing offense, and I'm amazed that one or more producers weren't thrown out of the building.

Fox News calling out another news organization for dishonesty is pretty amusing, though.
