Before “Warcraft” were variations of these: [Link: www.cae.com…]

They were available in varying levels of complexity from the late ’60s on. A British company (Redifon) supplied most of the 3rd world militaries. The Spanish Navy had the most advance example (circa 72) at their academy just outside of Madrid.

Mid ’70s there was a mind blowing state-of-the-art classified U.S. military version on the 2nd floor of a nondescript building in downtown La Jolla, not far from Mitt’s present elevator garage home. Everyone coming and going wore civvies. Ho-hum stuff by todays standards.

I have a feeling that all functional software will eventually have to take the format of gaming—because that seems to be the real skill that society is presently teaching. During my dad’s generation, everyone knew how to build an engine blindfolded—they learned this on their own.

This may be a second Gutenberg-type revolution, that not only changes our operant technology but also our consciousness.

More than a bit of truth there.

I believe we are well underway.

Your point is well taken.
A significant difference with ASTTs (Action Speed Tactical Teachers and Weapons Trainers): Picture a movie theater with individual private rooms surrounding the main floor. In the projector room and across the back wall are the IT guys and gals with their controlling computer systems along with the “Brass” observing a gods eye view on the screen of the operation being played out by the students in the private rooms, each configured to emulate a sub, surface craft of some type, aircraft, whatever. And made up as the real CIC or control room of said war machine. (vs. ones bedroom or parents basement). When the doors to the private rooms closed - they locked for the duration of the exercise. All communications were as they would be in real warfare.

All operations, communications and individual decisions are recorded.

After the exercise everyone meets in the theater and reviews the recorded exercise, learning how to do it better. Think [Link: en.wikipedia.org…] Kobayashi Maru before the term was invented.

It allowed huge savings (fuel, personnel, wear & tear on equipment) and most importantly practicing high risk stuff without life threatening consequences.

This was serious war gaming.

It’s got to work its way into factories, and even operating rooms. I’m not sure we need to take another step away from reality, but that’s what’s happening. We just need countermeasures.

Agreed. When utilized, and my only experience with the technology is military and air traffic control simulators, the results with increased skill in action are amazing. Increased productivity in many areas of business/life is certainly ripe for improvement with less time and material lost. There are systems for surgeons already in place.

I wouldn’t trade my training, travels and experiences for anything - but watching the speed of technology advance and its impact on us all now and in the foreseeable future makes me occasionally long to be a 20s something once again.
