Did you ever hear anyone say "I got laid off from my $60,000 year job, but that's totally awesome because now I can collect unemployment and don't have to work!"

FACT: people on government assistance are usually elderly, disabled, and unable to work. No one CHOOSES this as a lifestyle, it totally sucks as a lifestyle.

Or they're like my friend who works 50 or so hours a week at a job she basically cannot stand and even with that her family can not longer make ends meet because her husband lost his part time job when his Blockbuster closed. She doesn't want to be on government assistance, but she wants to make sure she, her husband, and their son have a roof over them and food to eat so she has no choice. Government parasite my ass.

My experience is not that a person is punished for hard work, but rather that the reward for it usually doesn't amount to a hill of beans. Employers are usually more interested in propriety than in work. What I call courtiers are generally more successful than good workers.

And as a person who has been poor for much of his adult life and dependent on disability payments for survival I can tell you that attempts to 'reform the system' will only punish those people who really need that money. The people that game the system will simply learn how to game the new system. Being poor is not the same as being stupid, or even lazy.

But the modern religion, that weird mixture of Christianity and capitalism, knows that the poor are sinners and must be punished for their lack of faith.

So how far does $4000 go in America today?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t go very far at all.

I'd kill for that much money. I'd be living high on the hog.

My disability is $720 a month. The market rent for my apartment is $900. I pay $139 for it. That leaves me $581 a month for everything else. The bills I have to pay amount to about $80.

If I was making $4,000 a month I'd have over $3,000 to for myself after paying rent.

This is in Canada which I know is generally more generous than the U.S.

Where did this loon come up with his figures?

Which reminds me, people who work at Walmart can't survive without government assistance, since Walmart only hires workers without giving them a fulltime schedule, which means NO BENEFITS, in addition to being paid shit wages.

Good find. Also note that ER visits are not insurance. You still have to pay the full bill if you're uninsured. And since ER bills are higher than regular doctor's visits, this results in bankruptcy for a lot of people. Not to mention that it is not a government mandate that requires ERs to treat people regardless of ability to pay. It's that pesky hippocratic oath that doctors take.

Is this from the "American" "Family" Association? What a shame for such an organization to have such contempt for so many American families.

I wonder if they think that veterans who receive disability from the government are "parasites". Would love to see them tell my cousin's husband who served in Desert Storm that he's nothing but a parasite. The idea of the self-reliant American not getting help from the government is a big fat myth.

It's federal law that hospitals that take Medicare/Medicaid have to treat emergencies without inquiring about ability to pay.

This is the GOP strategy, to stoke up resentment for the mythical "welfare queens" living large off the government while working americans struggle to get by. Recent studies show that nearly half of people getting public assistance claim they aren't, so they don't seem to realize the Right is targeting the very government programs they themselves rely on. Instead, they seem to think the budget can be balanced by cutting the benefits of "others", the "others" of their imaginations being illegal immigrants and african-americans (when in reality whites are the majority of the recipients of government assistance programs).

Most of the people I know, me included, who work and have insurance are just one hospital visit away from bankruptcy. With hospital costs the way they are I won't be able to pay the 20% that the insurance don't cover. So unless Obama Care can cover more than what current insurance plans cover it won't help solve the "bankruptcy from hospital bill" problem one bit.

The writer ignores the meteoric rise of health insurance costs before Obama took office. Partisan hack.
