Is there an advantage to having one camera serve as both as still and movie camera?

Wouldn't dedicated units be preferable?

Seems to me 15k would buy some pretty sophisticated equipment.

Excellent question-Well the dedicated units that do 4k are a ton more money. And they won't mount EOS lenses. So with this beauty one can do feature film quality imaging and have a camera that can do excellent stills as time lapse or extended exposure shots like at night. Keep in mind when they say 24fps, it's not running a shutter. It's just recording in that format. Video frames.

This camera would save a film maker $10,000 per camera. Or much more. The next step is 8k, but there are no theaters or projectors yet to be commonly found.

Gotcha.

The science, technology and the art of making pictures are a mystery.

That said, as an art form, I love photos. The works of Karsh, Ansel Adams, even Annie Liebowitz and others speaks to me.

I'm in love. And I just got the Canon 60D, which is a tremendous prosumer camera in its own right, but this is just nuts.

It's for the folks who want to make movies and high end photo/video, but leaning heavily towards the video spectrum. Not sure that the features would benefit someone who primarily shoots photos, though if you're able to pull stills from the video feed, it might be worth it.

Then again, we're talking about a camera that's the price of a new car.

I'll stick to drooling virtually.

Since I am in production of two HD short movies with my 7D I have learned a lot. I'm really grateful for the help of a couple pros. My biggest error going into video was underestimating the time and details. I'm 2 months into production of a 3 minute film. And we still have a key scene to shoot.

I hope to get work that pays well enough that I'll have this camera in my toolkit. But that may be a while.

If you want to go full 35 mm check out the C300 series

Is there a lot of software manipulation in your project?

No not much. I lack that resource. The wildest effects shot in this is a live eye looking back at you from the camera viewfinder.

I would say that this is the Imaging world's equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife, but the metaphor would only be apt if the Swiss Army Knife had an M-16, binoculars, metal detector, and meal rations. This isn't a jack of all trades unit that sacrifices quality for broader ability, it's almost literally the best of both worlds in a single device.
