Hey at least the History channel is showing something besides "Ancient Aliens and Hitlers Bodyguards Vs. Jesus and the Yeti" for a week or so...

(I didn't think it was possible to miss the old WWII 24/7 History channel format this badly. :( )

I don't think I would particularly mind a long string of "Disasters that killed lots of people" week. It would get morbid fast, though.

When someone gets upset about shark attacks or lightning strikes, I just remind them of how the numbers compare to less-hyped causes of death.

For instance, CDC estimates that from the 1976-1977 season to the 2006-2007 flu season, flu-associated deaths in the US ranged from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people.

Last year there was a bunch of hype over the 100th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. The Triangle Shirtwaist commemorators totally ignored other factory fires in Bangladesh, not 100 years ago but right freaking NOW in circumstances virtually identical to Triangle, except they made T-shirts for Gap and H&M instead of "shirtwaists"

re: #6 Learned Mother of Zion

My grandpa died in the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic.

The family legend is that my great-grandparents' wedding announcement appeared in the local newspaper next to her best friend's death announcement. It was just the way the pandemic was.
