Greenpeace: Apple Fuels iCloud With Dirty, Dirty Coal
Apple’s new data center is only one of many coal-fueled server farms across the country. The map below shows 52 of the largest, owned by companies like Google, Amazon, Apple, and Twitter. Mouse over a point on the map to see who owns the plant, and how reliant on coal it is, according to Greenpeace estimates. (Some data centers are clustered close together; zoom in on a particular area to see each one in more detail.)
Notice the title of the article. Now notice the paragraph I quoted. Furthermore, take a look at what Apple is building for this plant, from Apple’s own Facilities Report:
Apple has no intention of relying on Duke Energy’s dirty power for this facility and plainly states this fact in the above quoted report. This is just another attempt to blame Apple for all of the problems in the entire world. No mention of the fact that every single business and every citizen in the state of North Carolina relies on this same company (Duke) for their power. No mention of the fact that by building their data center in the US, Apple is creating jobs for American workers. Just blame and negative press, even though Apple doesn’t own or operate Duke Energy. Way to go, Greenpeace.
