This is very important.

I hope the evangelicals will be applauded for this efforts. These conversations are necessary in providing for a healthier political, cultural and religious environment.

On the other hand, if there is a knee jerk criticism of the effort, they will (somewhat justifiably) retreat into their shell.

They- and their religious beliefs- need to be respected and they need to be encouraged to find a wider moral tent.

While I support these initiatives, they should have happened much, MUCH sooner.

I'm glad to see reality being recognized.

Do you get the feeling that a lot of issues would stop being controversial if people would stop being hypocrites about their own sexual behavior and reproductive choices?

Does Francine get to say anything?

(Sorry, old inside joke.)

We humans have sexual intercourse. We want to screw when the hormones kick in. They kick in when we become teenagers. If teenagers are deluded by false information, female teenagers are going to become pregnant.

The fix?

Either a return to chastity belts, barrels with bungholes, and locked 20m tall towers or we educate them with correct information.

It's simple logic really.

Much of this, though, is attributable to the fact that evangelical denominations are not nearly as hierarchical as the Roman Catholic Church is. That hierarchy leads to more centralized doctrine and theology, which has bad points (such as seen here in refusal to engage the change in sexual mores), but also some good points (provided enough of the higher-ups are sane, it allows them to smack down crazies (such as Father Conklin in the 1930's)). Strong leadership structures can be very much a two edged sword, though I myself tend to favor them for their utility in dealing with loonies.
