Big Pharma would be the big loser, with the prison-industrial complex a close second. The amount of money involved in both legal and illegal drugs makes this the most entrenched stupidity we have, I think. Any changes would mean somebody's cash flow gets cut off, so they spread their cash around to prevent changes.

The savings plus revenue add up to nearly $14B annually. Imagine if that money was invested in education and drug treatment.

This. It's all about the money. Justice, common sense and freedom be damned.

Don't forget the distillers, brewers, vintners, distributors and everyone else in the almost $400 billion alcohol industry in the US.

What about us non smokers? I don't smoke pot nor do I have any interest in doing so. I don't care if you smoke it legal or not. I sincerely hope that The legalization that appears inevitable limits where it is smoked. I have fought enough to not be around cigarette smoke, I don't want to have to start the process all over again. Smoke to your hearts content but please keep it away from me!

Not sure about Big Pharma being the big loser. The private prisons and the DEA would be most damaged. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of people.
This is such a no-brainer. 20 years after pot is legalized, people will look back in amazement at this absurd 80+ year prohibition.

I've never smoked pot in my life, and I don't intend to start even if it were legal, but the costs of prohibition are prohibitive.

I'm a nonsmoker as well, and I'm pretty sure the "no smoking" ordinances would apply to joints just as much as cigarettes.

I can't find my source on how much big pharma has put into preventing legalization. There are a lot of very expensive drugs that can be replaced with home-grown pot. It's a huge issue for them.

Good point. Also, alcohol causes a lot of medical bills, car accidents and domestic violence that pot doesn't cause. Lots more money there.

Knights Templar Drug Cartel Burns Michoacan, Western State in Mexico
LA RUANA, Mexico -- The farm state of Michoacan is burning. A drug cartel that takes its name from an ancient monastic order has set fire to lumber yards, packing plants and passenger buses in a medieval-like reign of terror. The Knights Templar cartel is extorting protection payments from cattlemen, lime growers and businesses such as butchers, prompting some communities to fight back, ...

New Method for Producing Clean Hydrogen
Duke University engineers have developed a novel method for producing clean hydrogen, which could prove essential to weaning society off of fossil fuels and their environmental implications. While hydrogen is ubiquitous in the environment, producing and collecting molecular hydrogen for transportation and industrial uses is expensive and complicated. Just as importantly, a byproduct of most current methods of producing hydrogen is carbon monoxide, ...

Pope Francis Says Atheists Who Do Good Are Redeemed, Not Just Catholics
Pope Francis rocked some religious and atheist minds today when he declared that everyone was redeemed through Jesus, including atheists. During his homily at Wednesday Mass in Rome, Francis emphasized the importance of "doing good" as a principle that unites all humanity, and a "culture of encounter" to support peace. Using scripture from the Gospel of Mark, Pope Francis explained how upset Jesus' ...

WAPO’s Glenn Kessler Gives Three “Pinocchios” To Claim of Doctored Emails
It has long been part of the Washington game for officials to discredit a news story by playing up errors in a relatively small part of it. Pfeiffer gives the impression that GOP operatives deliberately tried to "smear the president" with false, doctored e-mails. But the reporters involved have indicated they were told by their sources that these were summaries, taken from notes ...

We know how to reduce the incidence of common medical conditions but …
Obesity is on the rise-- as is the incidence of Heart Disease, Diabetes, Stroke and various forms of Cancer. And, shockingly, diseases that had in the past begun in old age are now appearing at much earlier ages. A groundbreaking scientific study showed how easily (and inexpensively) the rate of occurrence of these and other serious illness could be greatly reduced-- but this information ...
