Muslim girls at Hamtramck (MI) High School had a big problem. They wanted to participate in the school prom, but almost two-thirds of them could not, because of cultural or religious issues. So, they organized their own girls-only dance, complete with catered food, music, a pink fountain, henna tattoos and prayer rugs. They raised $2,500 from bake sales to pay for it themselves.

The school was cool with it. Even non-Muslim girls came. The venue was a former Knights of Columbus hall. And a hundred girls had a great time.

This is Real America. We should all be proud of what these kids did, and what is possible in these United States.

This reminds me of something a friend wrote on her blog--her teenage son, who attends a very Orthodox Jewish boys' school wandered into the kitchen one day and said, "I wish my school had a prom."

After choking on her coffee, she said "Why?" He's never expressed much interest in girls, and he doesn't like to dance, even at weddings.

He showed her an ad for that contest where kids make prom clothes out of duct tape. Making stuff out of duct tape is his hobby.

It's all about gender, I guess.

I'm guessing the presence of the opposite sex was foremost amongst the cultural/religious objections they raised against the regular prom. I'm not sure why we should be 'proud' that these young girls are espousing gender segregation; if anything, discourage them from carrying such attitudes into their adult lives.

Be of good cheer. Mainstream Christian sexual morality of the 1950s couldn't hold against the sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll machine. Neither will the next generation of American Muslim kids.

You misunderstand. I was referring to RW Islamophobia, that anything having to do with Muslims is inherently evil, not the single-sex nature of their prom. Hamtramck is a community in transition from an Old World immigrant base that's mostly Catholic to a Middle Eastern immigrant base that's mostly Muslim. Yet, these girls' efforts to enjoy a small part of American culture within the restrictions of their religion was not only accepted by the school, but welcomed and supported. And the world didn't come to an end. Sharia has not been imposed on the fair city of Hamtramck.

The single-sex nature of their prom puts me off a little, I admit, but I understand why it must be. They took a tiny step away from the rigidity of their culture. Let them enjoy it, and don't judge their situation too harshly.
