I had no intention of retiring in Austin. I have a passion for my work and I plunged myself back into doing work. But that’s the only conversation I’ve had with him since.”
Rather also defended the report that led to the end of his network news career.
“We reported a true story,” he said. “That’s why I’m no longer with CBS News.”
I don't see anything in the posting above to support the headline.
Apparently CBS was conned into including a forgery, but the Bush story didn't depend on the (seemingly) forged letter - it was a minor and late addition. And anyway, while the supposed writer had died, his secretary from that time told CBS said that the letter did accurately represent his views about Bush's non-service.
So yes, Rather is correct in saying he reported a true story.
In the quote above, Rather didn't say anything about the dubious letter, despite Mich-again's bogus headline.
If you click through on the link that says he defended the report you find this quote:
"I believed it at the time, or I wouldn't have put them on. I believed it ever since, and believe it to this day. And I remark, the longer we go and nobody comes forward with proof that the documents were not what they report to be, the more I believe it."
The report may have been true but the documents were obviously fake...
