Addendum: he’s also of the Pam Geller, Robert Spencer and Frank Gaffney “school of Sharia paranoia”:

Pam recently condemned SEALs as antisemitic.

October 22, 2007: Capt. Joel Arends, South Dakota National Guard, "The War on Terror and the Enemies that U.S. Troops are Fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan." 7:00 p.m., 116 Murphey Hall, UNC-CH. At an event Monday, Capt. Joel Arends discussed the War on Terror and the enemies that U.S. troops are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Those enemies have an agenda that is rooted in radical Islam, he told an audience of about 50 people in Murphey Hall.

"The threat Western civilizations face from radical Islamic fascists is real," he said. "They think they will achieve their objectives through force."

But junior Ola Mohamed, who attended, did not agree with Arends' link between Islam and fascism. "Islam is a religion, and fascism is a political movement, so I don't see a connection," she said.

Khan said it is important to understand that a radical is anyone who takes the religion and individualizes it to serve his or her own interests. "Radicals are a part of every religion, not just Islam."

Arends was chosen to speak by the College Republicans because he brings a perspective of having been in Baghdad and fighting jihadists in person, said Amanda Anderson, membership and activism chairwoman for College Republicans.

Arends said it is important to discuss the War on Terror with college students because they make up much of the fighting forces abroad.

Arends also has a unique connection to the University.

While he was stationed in Baghdad, his unit captured a terrorist who claimed to be a UNC professor, he said.

"The man questioned went into depth and detail about UNC basketball, players and statistics," Arends said.

But Arends said he advised caution when determining the validity of the man's claims. "The power of American culture and Michael Jordan are far-reaching," he said.

Weird.

He’s also told us that “we are less safe and less secure” because of our presence in Iraq. To the contrary, we have not been attacked since 9/11. There will be a stable and freely elected government in the heart of the Middle East who are allies in the Global War on Terror. These facts can no longer be denied — it is inarguable that we are safer and more secure for liberating Iraq.

Stupid wingnut.

Worse Than Watergate? the Ultimate White House Scandal Matrix
Worse than Watergate. That's the refrain coming from the Obama administration's critics as it scrambles to tamp down a growing pile of scandals. WAPO’s Glenn Kessler Gives Three “Pinocchios” To Claim of Doctored Emails
It has long been part of the Washington game for officials to discredit a news story by playing up errors in a relatively small part of it. Pfeiffer gives the impression that GOP operatives deliberately tried to "smear the president" with false, doctored e-mails. But the reporters involved have indicated they were told by their sources that these were summaries, taken from notes ...
