They’ve been pushing for encryption backdoors since the ’90s, and other types of online communication for at least one year.

Some background articles from 2010:

FBI Drive for Encryption Backdoors Is Déjà Vu for Security Experts (Wired)

Be outraged by the FBI Encryption backdoor (One of Randall’s Pages)

From last year, some FBI backpedaling:

FBI: We’re not demanding encryption back doors (Wired)

re: #1 CuriousLurker

There’s a lot of resistance to this from security specialists. Not so much because of privacy concerns, but becuase backdoors would be a security nightmare—i.e. if the FBI can get in, (black hat) hackers & criminals will be able to also.

AFAIK this is like the FBI said to me they have to have a master key to my home so they can come in as they please, on a whim. My first response to this is somewhat profane, then I take a deep breath and Page.

re: #3 Daniel Ballard

I hear you. *sigh* It’s enough to make me want to start wearing a tin foil hat. You know, like: “ZOMG, when I visited the FBI’s website did it automatically install some sort of super-stealth key logger on my machine??” //kidding (half)

The whole Patriot Act was a slippery slope thing. Some tried to raise the alarm, but people were too scared then, including congress. Now we’re stuck with it.

Have you ever downloaded & tried to read it? Ugh. *grimace* We don’t really even know what’s in it. I just automatically assume that the government may be monitoring my phone calls, online activity, or financial transactions at any given time.

Will the FBI tweet us badly?

I’d love to see the roll call on this. I couldn’t find much, except it was sponsored by Leahy in the Senate.

This is stupid. The backdoors will be found by hackers, exploited, and the services will be ruined by it.

4 Reasons ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ Is Secretly About Drugs
Nice, right? Anyway, here's my thesis: Raiders of the Lost Ark is not an action-adventure movie about an archaeologist who plays by his own rules and saves the day. Instead, the film is an exploration of Marion Ravenwood's crippling drug addiction. An addiction that was born from her unhealthy relationship and continued association with Indiana Jones. Is it true? Who cares. Can I prove ...

Duke University engineers have developed a novel method for producing clean hydrogen, which could prove essential to weaning society off of fossil fuels and their environmental implications. WAPO’s Glenn Kessler Gives Three “Pinocchios” To Claim of Doctored Emails
It has long been part of the Washington game for officials to discredit a news story by playing up errors in a relatively small part of it. Pfeiffer gives the impression that GOP operatives deliberately tried to "smear the president" with false, doctored e-mails. But the reporters involved have indicated they were told by their sources that these were summaries, taken from notes ...
