This short article isn't the best description of the situation. Pages rather than paragraphs are necessary. There is no Ellis Island in Israel, and there really isn't an infrastructure that addresses the issue of immigration--which is logistically much different than the idea of Aliyah.

It's difficult enough for Jews from other countries to get into the flow of Israeli life, and Israel is not a country with abundant natural resources, space to live, and even water--where simply building a house is an international issue.

Not only is this a complex problem, any statement about the problem will hit the wrong note.

This particular quote needs footnotes galore:

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned the migrants are “threatening the fabric of Israeli society, its national security and its national identity.”

Since it's very difficult for Jews to agree about what Judaism is, what is this national identity? We know what the UN thinks, we know what the BBC thinks. The best definition for this national identity is simply the only place in the world in which there will never be Nuremberg Laws. That's about it. And that's an important thing to preserve. (It's ironic that both the UN and Great Britain are pushing towards their own version of Nuremberg Laws--which is basically the essence of the daily anti-Israel resolutions and BDS.)

As the state of Israel formed, I doubt that any Israeli leader ever thought that the nation would be considered a safer place than everywhere in Africa and the Middle East.

I would agree.

The subject cannot be treated, much less understood, with a singe discussion.

I would add inevitable comparisons to our immigration issues are not really valid. Israel is small country surrounded by enemies who daily call for her eradication and the genocide of her citizens.

Further, that nation has been on a war footing for over half a century- a situation not of her own will but imposed upon her.

And that's before we even begin to talk about how these realities impact teh national psyche.

What I find to be the most ironic is that, for decades, the media has been filled with stories of how evil Israel is ("APARTHEID! OPPRESSION! ELEVENTY!!!1!!!), & yet where do these people KNOW where to go in order to be safe...?
