Fucking Republicans

I agree with the sentiment, for sure. Free speech is sacred in a free society.

But then I think of the kids who killed themselves after being bullied, harassed or tormented anonymously because of their sexual orientation, etc.

I just don't know.

Yes, that's a totally legit point.
The solution for that sort of thing simply had to fall within the law. There are other remedies available.

re: #3 Daniel Ballard

Agreed- tough penalties- really tough penalties, maybe with mandatory sentencing if the bullying leads to death or other trauma.

Brave new world, you know?

I didn't want to upding because I was uncomfortable with the characterization, but I realized the story and discussion are far more important.

I don't like the characterization, but I had to upding because its directly relevant to LGF. Any state enacting a law like this would effectively cut it citizens off from sites like ours, as blog hosts are not going to change their whole set up for one state.

Why is it always Republicans trying to curtail the First Amendment? Aren't they the ones touting their love and admiration for the Constitution?

The question becomes how can you find the bullies without a law to expose them? Tough penalties is a great talking point, but useless without being able to know who the bullies are there is no way to bring them to justice.

I have personally been the victim of this sort of bullying. I really don't think that these cowards would be able to act this way if they know they were not protected by being anonymous. There is nothing in Free Speech that suggests it should be anonymous.

I think this law would help cyberbullies by giving them real identities to get to work on.

Um, you forgot Ben Dover. I'm pretty sure he'd sign this.

And, in all seriousness, the entire middle school structure needs revamping.

Way more adults paying way more attention, to begin with.

I just don't know.

That won't be solved by taking away rights, it'll be solved by changing the school system (which means it won't be solved)

also imagine any community on the internet where anonymity is key, support groups

So online AA groups would be forced to out themselves

Seems like Republicans are just mini-Putins.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions? This is not for anyone but the jerkoffs pushing it. I cannot see a GOP/ TP candidate anywhere giving a rats ass about any gay or lesbian bullying anywhere. Call me callous. I think they just want more control. Period.

This isn't something that the law can deal with without skirting dangerously close to tyranny.

Ethics can deal with it. If people were able to say, "I shouldn't do that," or "I can't do this anonymously," and not do those things it would be better than law.

But ours isn't a society big on ethics, in my opinion.

Of course they fucking do!

Very interesting point there.

“remove any comments posted on his or her website by an anonymous poster unless such anonymous poster agrees to attach his or her name to the post.”

They really just don't get the concept of "anonymous" do they? If your name is on it then your not an "anonymous poster" are you? Besides which the vast majority of internet posters do not use their given name, they use a screen name. How is a web master of a site supposed to in any way sort posts made under a real given name from those made anonymously when no system exists (or can without a worldwide effort that would cost trillions and require the cooperation of every country on the planet) to verify the identity of posters?

This is just more pointless, unenforceable, costly, intrusive, free speech curtailing legislation brought to you by the party of "Small Government."
(who also apparently do not have a clue as to how the internet works)
