I expect for the rest of my life there will be arguments over SONGS, and nuclear power in general.

Fukushima has shown just how expensive nuclear accidents can be. Japan has had to become a non-nuclear power nation almost over night, leading to heart-ache in their country and loss of economic strength, not to mention a large increase in their carbon emissions and strengthening their dependence on nations like Iran.

More background on this at Atomic Insights: Rod Adams is heartily pro nuclear, and he’s happy with the resignation:

I have an idea- send in Naval nuclear engineers. They should be a pretty unbiased lot, less likely to cave to any kind of political or outside (business) pressures and let them determine of the plant is safe or what needs to be done to make them safe.

The other thing to note: we all saw how sensitive radiation monitors are, and how they are able to detect even incredibly small amounts in areas far distant from Fukushima , but the detectors at the plant weren’t able to pick up anything after the incident:

Another TEPCO.

re: #5 researchok

Another TEPCO.

I honestly don’t think it’s another TEPCO, in the US it would be extremely difficult to try to cover up or attempt to downplay even the smallest release. I do think that the guy who resigned didn’t really belong there.

re: #6 Randall Gross

Fair enough- but a culture that idealized the guy for so long is itself, broken.

As I’ve said before, I wouldn’t mind nuclear power so much with the following caveats:

1) Build new nuclear plants and have them inspected by unbiased experts.

2) Upon fulfilling 1, shut down the old nuclear plants. Between the aging tech and possible Achilles heels like Fukushima’s pump-fed coolant system, we’d all sleep better without them running.

3) Recycle the spent fuel rods or something. Anything other than just burying them or otherwise throwing them away. Its senseless.
