Looking Back At Teton Dam Disaster
Twin Falls, Idaho (KMVT-TV) 36 years ago today (actually, yesterday), during America’s Bicentennial year, the Teton Dam in Eastern Idaho broke, releasing all of the water stored behind it.
Just before noon on June 5th, 1976, Teton Dam in Eastern Idaho ruptured, sending 80 billion gallons of water rushing down the Teton River.
I had just turned 15 the previous month. I remember People in the area pretty much just dropping what they were doing and loading up heavy equipment and gathering food, bedding and clothing and heading to Rexburg and other afflicted communities to assist in the recovery.
