I read the article twice and still cannot figure out if he's in custody. It sounds like he's not.

If he's convicted that means he's in custody.

In our legal system you can't try (or convict) a person in absentia.

Also, the article mentions that he testified.

Thanks - I totally spaced on that. Also didn't realize we don't try in absentia. Glad the creep is going to be behind bars for a long while.

Pointless. They'd just rationalize that their creepy evil actions weren't really creepy nor evil. You can't outwit crazy.
